The Legend of the Bikini Tree began in 1997 when high school art teacher Sharon Gilmour felt drawn to paint a bikini on a gum tree a few kilometres north of Warialda, which bore striking resemblance to the figure of a woman. Since then, “The Bikini Tree” has adorned many different bikinis, in the theme of various events like the Olympics, State of Origin, Warialda Off-Road and Christmas.Sharon describes the three as a community noticeboard which is always painted in a theme representing what's going on in the world at the time. For example; State of Origin, Olympics, Christmas etc.The "Bikini Tree" has been a part of Warialda culture for many years. No one knows when the tree will be painted next or what the theme will be.
Warialda locals are proud of their tree and look forward to seeing what it will be dressed in next.
