Carinda House, Stephen Street, Warialda

This residence was originally known as ‘Corinda’ and was the private residence of William H. Crane and his family in the 1880s. Crane was the proprietor of the ‘Royal Hotel’ and at various times was a saddler, butcher, farmer and grazier.  Carinda was constructed of pit-sawn timber slab construction on ground level.  Horse stables and paddocks were adjacent.

He built the pitched roof section first and in 1900 the second storey was added to the northern section.  The Warialda Standard Carinda housereported that W.S. Russell was the builder.  Crane and his family moved to Sydney in 1912.

It was a maternity hospital conducted by Nurse Marshall in the 1920s from 1919 to 1926.  Mr and Mrs Stehr later ran a boarding house and in 1943 Les Rolfe occupied Carinda and operated a Stock and Station agency.  His widow later established an Insurance Agency on the premises.

In 1977 a local committee bought Carinda for use as a Community Cultural Centre. In 2000 a Heritage Grant was obtained to restore the roof and to complete exterior painting.  The community group has continued to restore the building on conservation principles.

Other Accommodation

In December 1939 Councillor Pyrke expressed concern about the number of campers in the lane adjoining the showground.  ‘He thought something should be done from a public health point of view’.[4] Yallaroi Council determined to investigate the setting aside of a camping ground on the temporary common and the provision of sanitary conveniences.  It was during the Great Depression and the increased use of motor cars during the 1930s that many country councils established camping and caravan areas for the unemployed, homeless and travellers.
